Defining the Product Rectangle
A common error in small-yard planning is confusing a product’s assembled footprint with its shipping package dimensions. For the IKEA ASKHOLMEN table, outdoor, foldable dark-brown (article 305.574.98), the manufacturer specifies product measurements of length 24 3/8 in, width 23 5/8 in, and height 28 3/4 in. It seats 2 and is intended for outdoor use. The same product page lists package dimensions for shipping logistics; these are not folded dimensions. Do not treat a package thickness as the collapsed profile of the table.
To map this footprint, lay out a 24 3/8 by 23 5/8 inch rectangle at your intended patio position using tape or paper. This shape represents the area the table occupies when open. The official advice and care document covers cleaning and seasonal storage but does not provide a folded dimension or prescribe extra clearance around open chairs. If you plan to store the unit folded, measure the actual piece after following the model instructions rather than assuming it matches the box size.
Separating Chairs from the Table
The marked rectangle does not account for seating. Chair pull-back distance depends entirely on the specific chairs you select, their geometry, and how users move them. Bring your chosen chairs to the taped rectangle and physically sit down, push back, and stand up. Observe where the rear legs land. We discuss measuring individual seating pieces further in our guide to storing folding chairs between uses.
Door Travel and Adjacent Furniture
Beyond seating, consider how nearby doors swing. Open any adjacent patio door fully while someone sits at the marked table position. The door arc must clear both the table edge and the occupied chair path. If other furniture sits nearby, such as a storage unit whose exterior and interior sizes must be read independently, verify those boundaries as noted in our notes on outdoor storage bench sizing.
