Two Distinct Spatial Checks
When reviewing a garden storage bench, treat the numbers as separate checks rather than a single puzzle. Take the Keter Eden storage bench, item 258676, as a documented example. Its published assembled exterior dimensions are 140 x 60 x 84 cm. These figures describe the patio footprint and overall height, including the backrest and arms. They determine where the unit sits outdoors, much like planning any furniture placement discussed in our patio table footprint guide.
The published internal dimensions for that same model are 128 x 50 x 38 cm. This describes the cavity available to hold items already inside. The manufacturer states a 265 L capacity, but a listed capacity does not establish whether a specific rigid item passes through the opening.
The Unlisted Clear Opening and Lid Travel
The official user manual for this Keter model illustrates a hinged seat acting as the storage access point. Crucially, the manual does not publish the clear opening dimension or the lid swing clearance. You cannot derive these values from the exterior or internal heights.
A rigid item that fits the internal width, depth, and height may still fail to pass through the actual opening due to the hinge geometry or lip overhang. Before storing a specific object, verify the opening size and lid travel arc on the assembled bench in its intended location. Position the bench so the lid lifts fully without striking a wall or railing. Check an item-specific storage reference, such as our hose reel storage guide, rather than assuming equipment like a reel will fit inside a bench.
Dimensions of one model do not transfer to another. Measure your items, check the opening, and plan surrounding clearance carefully.
