Comparing Placement Designations
Two household mats may share a 50x80 cm footprint yet carry entirely different placement instructions. The IKEA OPLEV is explicitly labelled for indoor and outdoor use. It features an 11 mm thickness, polypropylene pile, and synthetic-rubber backing. Maker instructions permit wiping or hosing it dry, though they also advise storing it inside when not in use to extend its life.
In contrast, the IKEA SINDAL shares the same 50x80 cm dimensions and presents a 12 mm thickness with a coir surface and natural latex backing. Although it resembles a typical doorstep mat, the specification restricts it to indoor use only, requiring vacuum or shake care. This demonstrates that visual similarity and width do not determine approved exterior exposure. An indoor-only product should never be selected for an unsheltered exterior merely because it resembles a doorstep mat.
Commercial Entrance Systems
Commercial entrance flooring represents a distinct category from loose household mats. Systems like Forbo Coral Grip MD offer open non-backed or optional backed formats designed for indoor and outdoor entrances, available in sizes such as 60x90 cm. These commercial systems involve different scales and installation contexts, requiring their own specification process separate from residential loose-lay options.
Site-Specific Clearance Checks
For a mat designated for outdoor use, compare its stated width, depth and thickness with the actual doorway. A paper outline can show whether the chosen width and depth fit the landing. Then place the actual mat in position and swing the door through its full arc to verify clearance over the mat. If the approach involves adjoining patio surfaces, reviewing modular deck tiles may help contextualize the surrounding area. Similarly, coordinating the entrance with broader approach path surface helps consider the mat alongside the paving. Follow the selected mat’s care instructions when maintaining it.
